Shoes, A Review

15 Apr

Almost a year ago I was bit by a brown recluse spider on my left ankle. This was one of the most painful experiences of my life. The small spider bite opened into an ulcer over an inch across. Within a few days of the bite I had a skin infection which spread up my leg.

After much bed rest with an elevated foot, painkillers, and two rounds of antibiotics, not to mention a wretched emergency room visit, the wound healed. It took about a month and a half for the wound to heal and about that much time for me to be able to walk again easily. I was lucky as I healed quite quickly and my scarring is fairly minimal.

So what does this have to do with a shoe review? Well, though it has been almost a year I still experience fairly constant heel pain. Rather intense pain that affects most of my left heel and parts of my ankle. Without health insurance I have no options other than to live with it. Living with it has meant giving up my cute shoes for comfortable shoes. This has been a fairly difficult thing for me. While I’m by no means a woman who owns hundreds of shoes I do like shoes. I’ve always had a fairly small collection of well curated boots and flats.

Since the bite I have been searching and searching for the most comfortable shoes for my condition. The first adequate shoe I tried were Kalso Earth shoes. I bought a pair of sandals from them that kept my pain to a minimum but they could not hold up to the rough terrain of Arizona and were in fairly rough shape after only 2 months of wear.

Sometime in the spring I decided to expand my search and ended up at a shoe store in Tucson, Arizona which focused on walking shoes and such. I tried on lots of shoes and they were ok. Then I tried on this shoe:

These sandals are slightly different than mine.

When I slipped these shoes on immediately my legs relaxed and the throbbing in my heel eased. Looking at my my feet my heart sunk a bit though. These are definitely not my style and very expensive considering I don’t find them terribly attractive. I could not ignore how much better my foot felt though. So I bought them.

I have been amazed at how much these shoes ease my heel pain. Out of vanity and a desire for warmth I also bought a pair of Earth boots around the same time. Most days I wear the boots outside of the house and just wear the sandals around the house. By the end of a day of wearing the boots I really regret it. My heel is throbbing through the night. On the days that I slip into my Zieras first thing and stay in them all day my foot feels great.

Settling In

21 Feb

Ok, so things have been a bit spotty here but now my work space is pretty set up and my schedule is clear for another month of student coaching. I have a long list of drawings, dresses and logos to attend to but first, I thought I share a little peak into my work space. Not exactly the gallery but it seems to be a perfect amount of space for draping dresses, cutting patterns and drawing.

Oddly enough this space reminds me a lot of a drawing I did years ago, Attic. This drawing was actually based on another attic studio space I had been in once but I feel like it looks more like the space I’m in now.

I also set up a space to photograph dresses this morning. It took a little tweaking and learning how to use my camera a little more effectively but I think it will work out. I just took pictures of some fabrics for a client this morning and will be shooting new dresses in the coming days.

Moving

19 Jan

For the past 2.5 years Southern Arizona has been my home. We love living in the desert mountains. This town has been an amazing community to live in and to watch my daughter grow in. Having lived my whole life in New England and New York living in Arizona has been an amazing adventure.

Now, it’s time for a new adventure. While we love it in the tiny town of Patagonia, it is a difficult place for a family to make a living. As a result, by mid-February we will be living in Washington State. The move is bittersweet, I’ll miss the beauty of the high-mountain desert and the friends who have become family. I am a nomad at heart though and every adventure seems to have some sadness at its start.

To fund our trip and lighten our load we are having a giant sale at Tumbleweed & Poppleswamp, online and in person. If you have had your eye on a dress or a piece of art the next few weeks will present great chances to get these pieces at very good prices.

Goals for 2012

15 Jan

Now that we are half way through January already it seems like time for me to publicly proclaim a few of my bigger goals for 2012. I have addressed parts of them already but I do think there is something to sharing the specifics of my goals. I have three areas I’m really focusing on developing personally and professionally this year.

Drawing has been a big focus already, I’ve produced and finished so many pieces already this year! I mentioned briefly in my post yesterday that I plan on working on more illustrations this year. My intention is to build an illustration portfolio which is separate from my fine art drawing portfolio. My hope with this is to start getting some freelance commercial and editorial work. Towards this goal, I have made a list of about 20 “assignments” for illustrations.

The next goal is regarding recipes and cooking. I really love creating new recipes and pushing myself to come up with inventive dishes. I’ve worked on and off in kitchens but do not feel it is my calling to be a restaurant chef or baker. With that in mind I’ve decided to really pursue cookbook writing this year. The first project is already in the works, a free e-cookbook of 16 recipes not previously published on this blog or anywhere else. I have other cookbook ideas that I am excited to pursue but am hoping this initial endeavor will help me get to the point of publishing the next projects.

And finally, there is my beloved Tumbleweed & Poppleswamp. Now that I have the shopping cart up I’m really excited to promote and grown the on-line dimension of this business. I’m in the process of designing a new line of clothing that will be available ready-to-wear or to measurement through the site. I also foresee a massive development on the brick-and-mortar front but you will have to stay tuned for that announcement.

Thanks for reading, I’ll be posting about these projects over the course of the year and I look forward to your ideas and support!

New Drawing: Jennifer & Sister

ink and gouache on paper

This is one of the pieces which was commissioned as a Christmas gift this year. This drawing was ordered by a woman as a birthday gift for her twin sister. This is the first drawing which was inspired by a client’s memory. I was a bit nervous on taking a commission for a memory, I was worried it would not feel authentic. I took a lot of time really working out the details and in the end the twins were very pleased with the drawing!

I’ve been making lots and lots of food lately. Unfortunately I have photographed only a small portion of it and have written the recipes down for an even smaller portion. The recipes are still under development but here at least are some photos!

What me, Relax?

31 Mar

On Tuesday I did something shocking…I relaxed. It was for only a few hours and it was in Tucson (someplace I do not find terribly relaxing) but I think I almost felt relaxed for about 30 minutes. We stopped at an amazing restaurant, Feast, which has many gluten-free options on their menu. It was an amazing meal and fun to eat so lavishly at the lunch hour.
