gouache on board
The first painting I’ve complete since summer. I feel like I’m tying up the loose ends I have in my ideas of what I want from my paintings. This painting has gone through many layers in places and I feel like I worked out a lot of stuff in this painting.
I like painting in gouache. Since I like painting in fields of flat color it has always been a bit silly to painting in oil and to have to wait for the layers to dry. I’ve worked in acrylic in the past but I’m not fond of the finished surface of acrylic. I like the flatness of the gouache. Adjusting to how quickly it dries was tricky but I think I even like that now. I bought little tiny containers to mix colors in and that was really the missing link. I can mix my colors and go back to them as I would in oil painting.
I’m very excited to start on the next one of these.

pen & gouache on 100% cotton paper
I’m finishing things a bit slow lately. I’ve been a bit obsessed by the little gouache painting I posted about last week and it has been keeping me from drawing. This is kind of the sister piece to I Found a Woman There. I started this in Illinois as well. I don’t think that I will really keep doing the 100% gouached in drawings. I had fun doing these two but I think I enjoy the black line work with splashes of color. I will keep my color pieces for the panels.
Painting
7 MarI never thought I’d put this painting on-line. I finished it ages ago and was really unhappy with it when it was completed. My husband and a few friends liked it but it always irked me. Well, until a few days ago and now suddenly it is my favorite. Go figure.
I’ve also been looking at this painting of mine:

This is one of my most recent paintings. I really like the palettes in both of these paintings. I think that is my problem with paintings. I get kind of lost in the color but the colors in these two seem very tight to me.
I’ve been so into drawing that I have taken a very large step away from painting. I still feel the urge to play with color minus such a strong attachment to the line so I am working on a little (8″ x 8″) piece. I’m using gouache instead of oil, this allows me to move more fluidly from drawing to painting. I use acrylic gouache so it allows for nice layering. It dries so fast though.
So here is the little piece I am struggling through:

We’ll see if anything comes of it.
