I’m working on some new drawings right now that I’m pretty excited about. I’m really plugging away to get a few more pieces finished for my June show at Dubsea. I thought I’d share them with you all today in their half-finished state.
New Painting(s): Dream Scene #2

gouache on 2 boards
2 paintings each on 10″ x 8″ boards
This is the first diptych I have done in a really long time. What’s more, this painting was begun years ago. It was an intense nightmare I had in Brooklyn when my daughter was only 2 or 3 years old. I have been carrying the half-finished paintings around the country. My art show at Dubsea in Seattle this June has inspired me to complete a lot of new/old work.
In other art related news, it looks like I’ll be having an August show at another cafe. This is Katy’s Corner Cafe, also in Seattle. They have a boldy painted red wall ready for a cluster of my drawings. I’m working up something special for this unique spot.
New Drawing

This, is obviously, not my normal subject matter. A few months ago the local volunteer fire department asked me for a donation for a raffle at their annual steak fry fundraiser. Not exactly my target market but I love my local volunteer fire department very much so I offered to donate a custom drawing for the winner. Some time later the winner came by Tumbleweed & Poppleswamp to claim his prize. He was a local man and my typical detailed drawings of women in slightly surreal settings was obviously not his sort of thing. He asked if I would draw his dog and and I said I would sure give it a shot.
I really struggled settling on a background pattern and color. I wanted something that still fit in with my overall aesthetic but was not too feminine. I’m really pleased with the results and felt this piece really stretched my limits in some surprising ways.
Their Colorful Feathers Hold Us Together

This drawing is somewhere between a commission and a drawing that I came up with. A client of mine came in and wanted to see my new work and work in progress. I showed her everything I had going at that moment. Now mind you, I don’t sketch or draw things out in pencil to start with. So my “sketches” are more like notes to myself so can remember my initial idea.
This drawing originally was pulled from a rather ominous dream. I wanted to remember it so on the 18″ x 24″ paper I drew the face of the figure and 2 birds. When my client saw this drawing that was all that was there. I told her my initial idea and then she threw out a few ideas. From this collaboration came this drawing. The title is pulled from a song by one of my favorite bands, Miniature Tigers.

New Drawing: Healer
11 JulI recently finished this drawing as a gift for a friend. He lives in the community that I live in and has an enormous amount of love and healing energy which he shares freely with those around him. I felt that I really wanted to create something for him to show him how much I appreciate him and his knowledge. As soon as I decided to create a drawing for him this image sprung into my mind.
